Lesson 5 of 7 · Practical AI in Site Reliability Engineering
AIOps for SRE: Beginner to Expert Guide
AI does not replace SREs—an SRE who uses AI effectively resolves incidents 5x faster than one who reads logs
manually. Here is how to use AI at every stage of your SRE journey.
THE CORE IDEA: Start by using AI as your personal troubleshooting tutor (Beginner), then use
it to cut alert noise (Intermediate), and finally build automated root-cause pipelines (Expert).
1. Beginner SRE ASSISTANT
Goal: Understand errors and write scripts faster.
- Decode Error Logs: Paste a confusing Kubernetes
CrashLoopBackOff or
Linux error to get a plain-English explanation.
- Write Queries: Ask AI to convert "Show top 5 pods using CPU" into a
PromQL or kubectl command.
- Script Generation: Generate Python/Bash scripts for log rotation or health checks in
seconds.
2. Intermediate SRE NOISE REDUCTION
Goal: Cut alert fatigue and speed up incident calls.
- Smart Alert Grouping: Use AIOps (PagerDuty, Datadog, Dynatrace) to group 100 related
alerts into 1 incident ticket.
- Anomaly Detection: Let ML spot unusual traffic drops or memory leaks before static
thresholds fire.
- Auto-Postmortems: Summarize 200 Slack incident messages into a clean Blameless
Postmortem draft.
3. Expert SRE SELF-HEALING
Goal: Automated root cause & predictive scaling.
- Automated RCA: Automatically correlate error spikes with the exact Git commit or
Terraform change deployed minutes earlier.
- Predictive Scaling: Forecast traffic spikes ahead of time and pre-scale Kubernetes
nodes automatically.
- Guarded Auto-Remediation: Trigger safe, pre-approved rollback workflows when SLO burn
rate spikes.
| Outage Bottleneck |
Manual SRE Time |
With AI / AIOps |
How AI Speeds Up the Fix |
| Reading 50,000 Crash Logs |
25 – 40 mins |
30 seconds |
Clusters repetitive stack traces and highlights the single new error pattern that started at the
exact time of the outage. |
| Finding "What Changed?" |
15 – 30 mins |
Instant |
Automatically checks recent CI/CD deploys, feature flags, and cloud config changes that match the
error timestamp. |
| Writing Complex Log/Metric Queries |
10 – 15 mins |
10 seconds |
Natural-language query assistant translates plain English into exact PromQL,
LogQL, or SQL syntax. |
| Finding Past Similar Incidents |
20+ mins |
15 seconds |
Searches past postmortems and runbooks to show: "This exact DB lock happened 4 months ago; here
is the command that fixed it." |
4 Measurable Benefits of AIOps
- Faster Detection (Lower MTTD): Spots silent drops in user orders before customers
complain.
- Faster Recovery (Lower MTTR): Pinpoints the broken microservice or bad deploy in
under 2 minutes.
- 70% Less Alert Fatigue: Stops waking up on-call engineers for harmless, self-healing
CPU spikes.
- Cloud Cost Savings (FinOps): Identifies idle cloud VMs and oversized Kubernetes pods
automatically.
4 High-Impact Improvements to Start Today
- 1. Send Deploy Events to Monitoring: Connect GitHub/GitLab webhooks to Grafana or
Datadog so every deploy shows as a vertical line on error graphs.
- 2. Standardize JSON Logs: Include
service_name and trace_id
in logs so AI tools can link errors across services.
- 3. Enable Alert Deduplication: Turn on time-window grouping in Alertmanager or
PagerDuty.
- 4. Build a Runbook Bot: Index your team's Markdown runbooks so on-call engineers can
ask questions during outages.
| AIOps Category |
Open-Source Tools (Free to Practice) |
Enterprise Platforms |
Primary SRE Use Case |
| Kubernetes AI Diagnostics |
K8sGPT, HolmesGPT |
Cast AI, Komodor |
Scans Kubernetes cluster events and explains pod/node errors in plain English. |
| Alert Correlation & Incident AI |
Keep (Open-Source AIOps) |
PagerDuty AIOps, Rootly AI, BigPanda |
Deduplicates alert storms, groups related alerts, and auto-drafts postmortems. |
| Observability & Anomaly AI |
Prometheus Anomaly Detector, OpenTelemetry |
Datadog Watchdog / Bits AI, Dynatrace Davis AI, Grafana Sift |
Detects abnormal latency/error anomalies and correlates them with recent deploys. |
3 Copyable Prompts Every SRE Can Use
(After Masking Secrets!)
# Prompt 1: Kubernetes CrashLoopBackOff Root-Cause Analyzer
"Act as a Senior SRE. Below is the output of `kubectl describe pod` and `kubectl logs --previous` (with secrets removed).
1. Identify the exact root cause of the crash in 2 bullet points.
2. Give me the exact Kubernetes YAML fix or CLI command to resolve it."
# Prompt 2: Plain-English to PromQL SLO Alert Generator
"Write a Prometheus PromQL alert rule that triggers when the HTTP 5xx error rate for `service='checkout'` exceeds 0.5% over a 5-minute window, excluding 4xx client errors."
# Prompt 3: Terraform Reliability & Security Reviewer
"Review this Terraform module for production readiness: check for Single Points of Failure (single-AZ), missing resource tags, overly permissive IAM wildcards (`*`), and missing backup retention."
RULE 1 Keep a "Human-in-the-Loop" for Production Changes
Let AI analyze logs, find the root cause, and prepare the exact rollback command—but
always require a human SRE to review and click Approve before running destructive
commands in production.
RULE 2 Never Paste Secrets or Customer Data into Public AI
Tools
Always strip API keys, database passwords, private certificates, and customer emails/PII
before pasting logs or configuration files into any external AI chat.
RULE 3 Verify AI-Generated Commands Before Running
AI models can occasionally invent command flags or suggest outdated syntax. Always use
--dry-run (in Kubernetes) or terraform plan to preview what a command will do
before applying it.
RULE 4 Fix the Root System, Not Just the Symptom
Don't use AI to automatically restart a crashing pod every hour forever. Use the time AI
saves you to fix the underlying memory leak in the application code.
